    MySpace Walks Again

    Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

The Megan Meiers case has been given a lot of attention lately because of the bizarre situation surrounding it. Well, this case, which I was unaware of, is just as divesting, but more straightforward. I am just finding out about this because the parents are suing the man responsible of their daughters death, in a civil suit – since, as we know, no criminal charges can be pressed if you are responsible for someone you met and taunted online killing themselves.

In this case, a 14-year-old California girl met 30-year-old Kiley Ryan Bowers of Celina Texas in 2005. He traveled across state lines, “sexually assaulted her,” and then broke it off. When he did that, the girl fell into a deep depression. She killed herself in July 2006. Her suicide note suggested that her relationship with Mr. Bowers was partially to blame for her suicide.

The family is suing for compensation of medical and counseling bills and punitive damages for mental anguish. But of course, MySpace will walk.

You can read the full story here: Victim’s parents sue MySpace after suicide, assault by Celina man

The problem here is that MySpace was the playing grounds where this young girl fell in love with this older disgusting scumbag. He traveled half the country to meet her and have sex with her. Though the suit says she was “sexually assaulted,” I’m pretty sure it was consensual (otherwise why would she be depressed when he broke it off… enough to killer herself? C’mon.)

And now, MySpace will get away because it can’t be expected to verify ages and check each member. That may be so, but this is not an isolated case. It constantly happens. When will they be held accountable for the disgusting breeding ground they have created?

    Never.

So… what then? Well, parents, protect your own kids. Don’t expect anyone else to. If parents monitor their child’s Internet activity and talk to their kids, this won’t happen as often. Monitoring software like PC Pandora helps parents keep their kids safe.

From the Mind of a Middle School Student…

    Thursday, December 6th, 2007

I was saving this blog entry for a slow day… It’s a little old but worth pointing out.

In the opinion area of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Fatima Bawany, a middle school student, wrote a brilliant guest essay. Her piece, Spy on your kids online? Young cyberspace travelers do need parental guidance, looks at parental monitoring from a youngsters point of view. Not only does she agree that parents should monitor and that kids DO need guidance, but she rationalizes it in a way that would make any parent proud to have her on their side. Hopefully her peers will listen to her… but more so I hope the parents of her peers do.

And, of course, hopefully they would buy PC Pandora to do the job of monitoring their kids… :)

A Sad Day for the Law – Lori Drew Runs Free

    Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Well, if you haven’t been notified yet, Lori Drew, the mother who’s actions on MySpace resulted in the suicide of Megan Meier, will not be charged. Basically, there is no law that she could be prosecuted on. Apparently, there is no crime in taunting someone and emotionally destroying them to the point that they commit suicide. I love this country… and more so, I love the “grown ups.”

The best write-up I have found so far on this story is the AP article here: No Charges in MySpace Teen Suicide Case.

It is disgusting and incredibly upsetting… But I won’t vent. I’ll say that this is an EXTREME case for the need of monitoring software like PC Pandora. Unless there is a new development in the case, I will make this my deeply saddened last post on the topic.

I will leave you with this blog post by Judith Warner on the New York Times website: Helicopter Parenting Turns Deadly.

She has some great and interesting perspectives that I share. She talks about “Helicopter Parenting,” a term used to describe the generation of parents today that are hovering parents; they run interference, they pave the way, they fight their kid’s battles for them, they protect them at all cost. In short, helicopter parents don’t allow their kids enough rein to fail, or succeed, on their own. Warner also chats with to Rosalind Wiseman, author of “Queen Bees & Wannabes” and “Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads.” There are some very interesting thoughts in here, I suggest reading it and all parents out there re-examining their over-protectiveness. In the words of my generation (X’ers and Y’ers), “Take a chill pill, yo.”

Man Met Lakeland Teen Through MySpace And Sexually Battered Her

    Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Yet another case of MySpace gone bad… but this one is intriguing.

First, the story is here, Detectives: Man met Lakeland teen through MySpace and sexually battered her, I suggest reading quickly. The gist is that this 39-year-old guy, Richard Gagnon Jr., met a 14-year-old girl through MySpace. They became friends and basically, he drove from the Ft. Lauderdale to the Lakeland area of Florida (a good 4-hour drive) several times over the summer to meet her and have sex with her in a local Motel 6. He would often sexually batter her.

But there’s the curious part – SHE KEPT DOING IT!!! It wasn’t one incident… it was no less than 5 times!

If you haven’t gone to the link yet, please do. LOOK AT THE GUY!!! HOW did any 14-year-old girl meet THIS GUY face to face and go through with it – OVER AND OVER?! And get sexually beaten?

Well, folks, this is just pure insanity. Why do we need to monitor our kids? Because obviously they aren’t adult or mature enough to make sane decisions. Clearly this girl has issues, but beyond that – where were the parents? It’s ridiculous.

This is another fantastic argument FOR monitoring your child’s Internet activity. Don’t give them carte blanche and total freedom. They aren’t smart enough to make the decisions that they come across with the Internet at the fingertips.

Use monitoring software like PC Pandora! You’ll be able to see if your little girl is leaving the house to have sex with and get beaten by an ogre.

    Ridiculous.
