Man Admits Sex Assault on MySpace Teen
I love it when experts downplay the sexual predator problem on MySpace and the Internet in general. They often say it is an extreme case and usually doesn’t happen – or is not the norm.
Alright… but does that mean that these incidents are OK? No. Fine. So then, why should be parents be afraid?
Look here for instance: Man admits sex assault on MySpace teen
Basically, a 24-year-old shared drugs with, and then sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl he met on MySpace.
According to the girl, the guy (who claimed to be a musician) sexually assaulted her at a home in June (2007) after giving her cocaine and prescription drugs. She said that the man had sex with her repeatedly through the night, even after she became so feverish from the drugs that she had to immerse herself in a bathtub of cold water. She says she had been in contact with “the musician” online for a month, and that he gave her his cell phone number and asked her to have sex with him.
Now, the story has more details… but I ask you to stop for a minute and look at this part of the story. HE gave HER, HIS cell number and ASKED to have sex with her… and SHE DID! To me, that says the meeting was consensual. This was not a kidnapping. So, if you want to get really technical – this doesn’t fit into the “extreme” instance because the girl was not missing or abducted (at least, this report does not say she was)… That is a point for the critics who say extreme cases never happen. Alright. Fine. So then, what do you have??
A 15-YEAR OLD GIRL THAT AGREED TO MEET UP AND HAVE SEX WITH A GUY SHE MET ON MYSPACE!
Does this make the story any less sickening – certainly not – it makes it worse!!! THIS is why parents need to monitor their child’s Internet activity. Fine, don’t be afraid of the scary predators that abduct kids… fine. BE AFRAID OF YOUR KIDS! They are young, not-yet-fully-matured (I won’t insult anyone and say “immature”) KIDS! (key word = kids). They are entering a world that they cannot comprehend. The Internet is not a toy, it’s not just a place – it is a gateway to everyone and everything! Why are parents so trusting with their kids and thinking, “oh they’ll be fine.” Obviously not.
As much as this story angers me because this sicko allegedly took advantage of this 15-year-old little lady who will most likely be scared over the ordeal, it was her own doing! [NOTE: I have even read some of the guys friends come to his defense and say the girl begged him to come get her, she was selling and using her own drugs and she was so messed up she has admitted to not being able to remember exactly what happened. Do your own research and form your own opinion.].
Forget taking sides and either believing this guy who was apparently nice as a friend but could be a slimebag or this sweet little 15-year-old who is just about as innocent as every other 15-year old (get the drift)… the fact is THE PARENTS ARE AT FAULT. Maybe if they had been more concerned and had been monitoring their daughter’s activity – this could have been prevented.
Parents – welcome to the 21st century. Know what your kids are doing on the WORLD WIDE web. Monitor their activity… if you can’t do it alone (and I am pretty sure you can’t) use software like PC Pandora to help. For less than the cost of dinner, you can prevent situations like this from happening.
Knowledge is power.
