Amping up TV, Internet safety for children

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an inquiry into advanced blocking technology, aimed at keeping harmful material away from minors on television and on the Internet.

The Child Safe Viewing Act was adopted in December and instructs the FCC to look at technologies that can “improve or enhance the ability of a parent to protect his or her child from any indecent video or audio programming.”

Dan Isett, director of corporate and government affairs at the Parents Television Council, says parents need more effective ways of curbing indecent material on television and the worldwide web.

“[T]his proceeding from the FCC and the congressional action that prompted it…opens up the possibility for parents to be able to use a third-party rating system — if you trusted a group like the Parents Television Council or any of a number of others — to be able to use our ratings and more family-friendly ratings to select and pick and choose programming you want to allow your kids to see,” he explains.

The FCC will report its findings on the matter to Congress in August.

On the outset – though we’ll really have to wait to see what the findings are – this seems like a good idea. Though parents could already block programs effectively AND know what their kids are doing – so they don’t have to rely solely on blocks and filters – with our PC Pandora computer monitoring software.

Just a thought… :)
