Wacky Internet Predator Wednesday 58

Two weeks have past since my last official Internet Predators thread – a rare occurrence. But this week, we are back with a vengeance!

Since last Wednesday (of course, right after my Wednesday post), three stories have surfaced about internet predators – ALL INVOLVE REAL TEENAGERS!!!

  • A 41-year-old California man used the internet to entice a 13-year-old girl in Utah to travel to and have sex with him. The girl was found at a bus station, waiting to board a CA-bound bus.
  • A 28-year-old New York math teacher, who is already charged with having sex with a 15-year-old he met on MySpace, was arrested for meeting two more girls on MySpace, bringing them to his home, having sex with one and exposing himself to the other. Remember, he is a teacher, he met all these girls on MySpace (not at school) and there are THREE teenagers (that we know of) who have been affected by him…
  • A 17-year-old girl in Michigan ran away over this past weekend. Her brother saw her getting into a blue pick-up with a backpack. Later, friends told the family that she had met a guy online and he had given her a cell phone.

So, what can we learn from these stories? 1) GROOMING WORKS! 2) These guys DO exist 3) Teenagers are complicit and want to take risks!!!

Do you need more evidence or proof that monitoring your child’s internet activity is essential?

Lake County man could face life term for soliciting sex from teen
By Glenda Anderson, The Press Democrat

A Lake County man has pleaded guilty to using the Internet in an attempt to entice a 13-year-old Utah girl to travel to California so he could have sex with her.

Robert Lavern Davison, 41, of Kelseyville, could face life in prison for the plea agreement he struck with the Utah Department of Justice last week, officials said. The minimum mandatory sentence is 10 years, said Department spokeswoman Melodie Rydalch.

Davison’s plan was thwarted in November when the girl was reported missing. She was found at a Salt Lake City bus station waiting to board a Greyhound bus to California, Utah officials said.

Investigators determined that Davison had persuaded a third party to use a credit card to purchase the bus ticket, law officials said.

The girl met Davison, who called himself “Bear,” over the Internet while playing the online game “World of Warcraft.” They later began chatting online, according to Utah officials.

Davison was indicted by a federal grand jury in February following a three-month investigation by the Centerville Police Department, the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the FBI.

U.S. Attorney Brett Toman has called the case “another graphic reminder of the threats we continue to face in protecting our children from Internet predators.”

Davison is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 17, Rydalch said.

NY teacher faces more charges of sex with minor
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK — A Long Island teacher accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl has been charged again with having sex with another minor.

Defense lawyer Todd Greenberg said Friday his client Daniel Rothbard was being held on $700,000 bail.

Rothbard is charged with criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child.

Nassau County police say the 28-year-old math teacher took a girl he met on MySpace and her friend to his Merrick home.

They say Rothbard had sex with one girl and exposed himself to the other.

Rothbard also is charged with having sex with a 15-year-old girl he met on MySpace in a school parking lot.

His lawyer says, “We look forward to resolving it in court.”

Ypsilanti Township teenager missing; family believes she’s with man she met over the Internet

A 17-year-old girl disappeared over the weekend, and her family suspects she’s with a man she met over the Internet.

Erica Kennedy was last seen by her older brother around 11 p.m. Saturday night as she was getting into a small blue pickup truck about two doors down from her house, her mother Lizz Bedolla said. She was carrying a backpack.

The brother called after Kennedy to stop, but she got into the passenger side of the truck, which sped off. He did not get a look at who she was with, Bedolla said.

Kennedy’s friends later told her family a man she’s been talking to over the Internet had given her a cell phone a few months ago.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Kennedy is classified as a runaway.

Anyone with information about Kennedy’s whereabouts is being asked to contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department at 734-971-8400.
