Supreme Court Ruling Could Take ‘Byte’ Out Of Cyberbullying

Dan Kurtz from the Daily News in Newburyport (MA) takes a look at previous rulings that can help schools who are wrestling with how to punish off-campus cyberbullying and not be sued under the guise of a student’s free speech rights being violated.

Seriously, folks, it’s a ruse. Students do not have total freedom to say what they want. They can’t stand up and yell “BOMB!” without being punished… nor should they be allowed to publicly (WHICH INCLUDES THE INTERNET) harass or threaten other students or teachers without being reprimanded by the school.

Clearly, the parents of the bullies aren’t doing anything and don’t care… Because with such an incredible powerful tool like PC Pandora monitoring software, there is simply no excuse for not knowing what your child is doing online and how they are treating/interacting with others.

If you don’t know what your child is doing online… well, there’s the solution to solving this issue. Use PC Pandora and find out. If you have a bully in your house, stop them – that way the school doesn’t have to.

Supreme Court ruling could take ‘byte’ out of cyberbullying
As I See It: Dan Kurtz

It seems as if you can’t open a newspaper or watch the news without a report on the growing problem of cyberbullying. The recent suicides of two Massachusetts high school students as well as the report of a 13- year-old bringing a handgun to Triton High School and the cyberbullying charges in Newburyport may all force school officials, parents and law enforcement to step up efforts to curb or halt cyberbullying altogether.

Local school districts claim that they are powerless to stop this activity because they say it happens off-campus and is therefore out of their jurisdiction. I believe they are mistaken, as a 2007 Supreme Court ruling has created an opportunity for schools to take action and avoid being sued by the perpetrators of cyberbullying under the guise of violating their rights.
